Itching associated with an allergy, generally results from chemicals in the blood called histamines. Your immune system releases histamines when you are exposed to substances to which you are allergic. These can cause several physical responses such as itching in the skin, eyes or mucous membranes. To ease allergy itches, you must treat your body's reaction to the histamines. Consult your physician before attempting any treatment to discuss which options are best for you.
Step 1
Use an over-the-counter antihistamine. The antihistamine will prevent your body from responding to the histamines your immune system releases to relieve itching. Antihistamines are available in pill and liquid form, as well as topical creams.
Step 2
Administer over-the-counter eye drops for itchy eyes. The eye drops contain a substance that constricts blood vessels around the eye to relieve itching.
Step 3
Apply calamine lotion or hydrocortisone, to itchy skin. Hydrocortisone shrinks swollen tissues to relieve itching. Calamine lotion cools and soothes itchy skin.
Step 4
Take a warm bath in colloidal oatmeal to relieve itching. Colloidal oatmeal is available at most drug stores. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.
Step 5
Apply an ice pack or a cold compress to the itch for 20 minutes or more. The ice will numb the area and relieve the itching as well as reduce any swelling.
