The Budwig diet was designed by German biochemist Johanna Budwig. On its website, the Budwig Center claims the diet has helped people with cancer, arthritis, asthma, fibromyalgia, diabetes, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, psoriasis, eczema and acne. Speak to your doctor before starting the Budwig diet, or any other weight loss diet.

Budwig Protocol

The Budwig dietary protocol was designed as an alternative form of treatment for cancer. According to the website, Dr. Budwig's healing plan works on improving the cells of the body by giving them the good fats and oils they need, while avoiding trans-fats. The diet focuses on blending flaxseed oil and low-fat organic cottage cheese along with additional dietary recommendations and restrictions.

Acceptable Foods

The Budwig diet allows you to consume some other foods along with the cottage cheese and flaxseed mixture. Stevia, which is a non-calorie sweetener, or raw non-pasteurized honey, dates, figs, berry and fruit juices are acceptable. You can also consume fresh herbs, raw nuts and seeds, raw cocoa, shredded coconut, black tea, 100 percent whole grain flour and preservative-free pickles from health food stores. Distilled or reverse osmosis filtered water is the only allowable beverage.

Unacceptable Foods

The diet require you to avoid all hydrogenated oils, trans-fats, animal fats, seafood , white pasta and bread, ice cream or dairy products other than the cottage cheese, cane sure, white sugar, molasses, maple syrup, xylitol, preservatives, processed foods, and unfermented soy products. The protocol also requires you to avoid pesticides and chemicals, microwaved foods, anything cooked in teflon or aluminium cooking ware or aluminium foil.

Losing Weight on the Budwig Diet

Dr. Johanna Budwig claimed her diet would improve the health of people who suffer from a variety of serious health conditions, but it is also possible to lose weight on the diet. The Budwig protocol restricts many high-calorie foods, which may result in a decreased caloric intake. As long as you follow the diet, the reduction of calories may result in weight loss.
