Weight loss over your body is a game of caloric intake versus caloric consumption. Weight loss occurs when you consume fewer calories than you burn over a given period of time. This forces your body to dip into your body fat as reserves of caloric energy to make up the difference. The simplest way to achieve weight loss around your stomach is to cut calories from your diet. Exercise, in addition to having a multitude of health benefits, can help burn calories and further force your body to burn fat reserves, including belly fat.
Step 1
Create a goal for yourself. Visualize yourself slimmer, lighter, healthier. Picture how you'll feel and look with a trimmer stomach. Whatever the reason you want to lose weight around your stomach, write it down to remind yourself. Make weight loss and healthier, better living a greater reward than a sedentary lifestyle or eating poorly.
Step 2
Begin a fitness routine with high levels of cardiovascular activity. You can include running, jogging, bicycling, stair climbing, swimming, rowing and more. Any activity that raises your heart rate to its maximum levels is considered cardio activity. These activities burn comparatively large amounts of calories and keep your heart healthy. Aim for sustained 20 minutes per day at least.
Step 3
Stop eating poorly if you are. Sugary sweets, soda, foods high in fat or even complex carbohydrates are all loaded with complex calories that are difficult to digest and store easily as fat.
Step 4
Start a healthy diet of lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and simple carbohydrates. Skim dairy items are okay in moderation.
Tips and Warnings
- Consult your doctor for additional dietary and health advice. Don't start any drastic weight loss dietary plans without your doctor's advice.
- Fitness alone will not cause you to lose belly fat. Crunches, sit-ups and other workouts tone your abdominal muscles, but cannot specifically target and burn stomach fat. Toning and building your muscles can even give your stomach the appearance of getting bigger if your muscles are surrounded by fat. The only way to lose fat is to burn more calories than you consume. This is why a healthy, moderated, balanced diet is key to fat loss.
