Your skin is a living organ not immune to sun damage. The practice of tanning the skin under sunlight or artificial lighting provides the short-term benefit of darkening the skin, but over time, extensive tanning can damage skin, reducing its elasticity and leading to wrinkling. If your skin appears damaged or unhealthy, there are things you can do to treat the skin and improve its health.
Step 1
Apply moisturizing lotion at least twice daily -- once in the morning and once at night. If you are heading out into the sunlight, apply moisturizing lotion that doubles as sun block.
Step 2
Stop smoking, if you currently do. Smoking can dry out and damage your skin by reducing collagen and elastin.
Step 3
Keep showers and baths short and wash yourself in warm water, rather than hot. You should also pat dry after a shower instead of rubbing your skin, which can be abrasive on the skin and dry it out.
Step 4
Drink plenty of water -- at least eight glasses -- throughout the day. A dehydrated body will lead to dehydrated skin, and dehydrated skin is less effective at protecting itself from damage.
