Side Effects of Testosterone Androgel

Testosterone AndroGel is a topical medication prescribed for men who have a deficiency, either naturally occurring or induced, of the male hormone testosterone. The medication is absorbed through the skin, and the dose is adjusted depending on blood levels of testosterone. Like all medications, testosterone AndroGel can cause side effects ranging from mild to serious.

Lab Values

Testosterone AndroGel can cause abnormal elevations in labs 9.3 percent of the time, according to a 3 year clinical trial reported by the National Institute of Health. In aftermarket testing reported by the NIH, abnormal lab values were reported for liver function tests, hemoglobin and hematocrit, PSA (prostate specific antigen), electrolytes such as potassium, calcium and phosphorus, and cholesterol levels.

Endocrine and Genito-Urinary Effects

AndroGel is associated with enlargement of the prostate, gynecomastia (increased breast tissue in men), hirsutism (hairiness), low sperm count, smaller testicles, and prolonged erections. The drug is also associated with an increase in benign prostatic hypertrophy, a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, according to the Mayo Clinic. An increase in prostate cancer of 1.2 percent was reported in men applying AndroGel, according to a 3 year clinical trial reported by the NIH. AndroGel can cause increased urgency and frequency of urination, especially at night, difficulty with starting or stopping the urine stream, or involuntary passing of urine.

Skin Side Effects

AndroGel can cause local skin reactions, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Common skin side effects are acne, hair loss (alopecia), and rash at the application site.

Other Side Effects

High blood pressure, difficulty breathing, nausea, headache, dizziness, sleeping difficulties and fatigue can all occur in men using AndroGel. Edema or swelling caused by fluid retention can occur; men with kidney, liver or heart disease should watch for worsening disease when taking this drug, according to the Mayo Clinic. Blood glucose levels can be lowered by AndroGel, which can decrease the need for insulin needed by people with diabetes.Mood changes common to men taking AndroGel are anxiety, amnesia, hostility, nervousness and a decreased sex drive.

Side Effects to Others

Because AndroGel is a gel, it may remain on clothing and be handled and absorbed by other people. If AndroGel is absorbed by women who are pregnant or breast feeding , it could harm the baby. If children are exposed to AndroGel, it could cause early sexual development or aggressive behavior, according to the FDA.
