Zumba is the Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that boasts over 12 million followers around the world. The Zumba shuffle is otherwise known as the Beto shuffle, drawing on the nickname of founder of Zumba Fitness, Alberto Perez, who created the move. It is one of the basic steps for merengue, a dance hailing from the Dominican Republic. Although not a traditional merengue step, the Zumba shuffle fits well with the fast-paced merengue beat.

Do the Zumba Shuffle

Step 1

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent and abs contracted. Be sure to stay strong and balanced to reap the fitness benefits of this move. Have your hands in front of you at chest level. Don't forget to have your merengue music playing. Now get ready to move.

Step 2

Swing your hips to the left. Point your right hand up to the right with left hand pointing down by your left hip. Switch sides by swinging your hips to the right and alternating hand positions -- right hand down, left hand pointing up to the left.

Step 3

Repeat twice to the right before switching back to the left. Find your groove to the music in a single-single-double pattern. Add intensity to the Zumba shuffle by maintaining straight finger tips and raising your arms above your head. Work the lower body harder by twisting your legs and alternating the direction of your toes.

Tips and Warnings

  • Change the pattern to singles to make the Zumba shuffle fit your favorite music -- try it with Cumbia or Reggaeton.
  • Be careful of your knees if you add lower body twisting to the Zumba shuffle.

Things You'll Need

  • Merengue music
  • Comfortable clothes and shoes
  • Flat surface
  • Space to move
