The jump rope is a versatile tool for getting in shape and simply having fun, although it can be frustrating to learn "the ropes" at first. Jumping rope takes a special amount of coordination and balance that can be learned only through practice. Learn five simple tricks to set the foundation for your jump rope skills.

Double Bounce

The basic double bounce is one of the most simple jump rope tricks. Simply jump twice with each revolution of the rope. Many beginners do this instinctively when they first start jumping rope.

Side Swing

Practice the side swing by putting your hands together while holding the handles and swinging the rope to one side, then the other, then below your feet to jump. Jump each time you swing the rope a different direction.

Skier

As its name implies, the skier replicates the motion of a downhill skier. Do a standard single jump, but jump from side to side as if you are skiing. This trick requires a good amount of lateral space.

X Straddle

Perform the X straddle by doing single jumps and alternating between having your feet spread apart and crossed. The X Straddle requires good coordination and balance to switch between the two steps.

Jogging Step

The jogging step essentially is jogging in place with a jump rope. Turn the rope forward and step over it with one foot, then step over it with your other foot on the next step. Continue to repeat stepping with each foot. If you have enough room in front of you, you actually can jog forward with the rope.
