Laugh lines are often nothing to laugh at and, over time, can join the multitude of other wrinkles creasing across your face. While getting old is inevitable, fine lines and dry skin don't have to be. If you find more and more wrinkles glaring back at you in the mirror, several general lifestyle changes and topical treatments can help to naturally firm up your skin and create a smoother and softer appearance.
Exchange the Serum for the Cream
A rich moisturizer doesn't just combat dry skin. It can also help to plump up your skin cells to almost instantly reduce the depth and severity of wrinkles and fine lines. If you're struggling with both wrinkles and dry skin, you may wish to avoid more lightweight anti-aging skin products, such as serums and gels, and focus on a cream with a thicker, more emollient texture. Some of the best moisturizing ingredients for a skin care cream, according to skincare critic Paula Begoun, include glycerin and shea butter.
Check Active Ingredients
Many anti-wrinkle skin care treatments contain proverbial "snake oil" --- ingredients with purported anti-aging claims that don't have a lot of scientific research to back them up. However, some anti-aging creams really can help with wrinkles; you just need to know what active ingredients to look for. For effective treatment of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging, use a cream that contains one of the following: coenzyme Q10, retinol, copper peptides or alpha hydroxy acids.
Wear Sunscreen
While any anti-wrinkle cream will do for night use, your day cream must contain sunscreen. The sun works as one of the chief causes of wrinkles, and can prove even more harmful for very dry skin whose natural moisture barriers and defense are already compromised. Ideally, your skin care product should have a minimum SPF of 30, the American Academy of Dermatology says.
Skip the Hot Showers
A hot bath or shower may feel heavenly, but can strip your skin cells of their natural oils and moisture. This can make dry skin worse, and thereby also worsen the look of your wrinkles. Instead, use warm water in your shower or bath and limit your bathing time to 10 minutes.
