How to Take Out Hard Contact Lenses

Hard contact lenses are different than the type of lens most commonly worn today. Most soft lenses are designed for comfort and are usually more durable than hard contact lenses. But if you have astigmatism or are particular about the quality of your vision through contact lenses, you may need or want hard contact lenses. These lenses are not as comfortable as soft lenses and require different handling, but they also provide better vision than soft lenses, according to the Cornea & Contact Lens Society.

Step 1

Wash your hands with soap prior to handling contact lenses. Rinse them thoroughly.

Step 2

Apply the lens suction holder (which should have come with the lenses when you purchased them) to the lens. Make sure it does not attach to the eye itself.

Step 3

Gently twist the suction holder to slowly pull the lens off your eye.

Step 4

Grab the lens at its edges between two fingers and slide the the suction holder sideways off the lens. Do not pull the suction holder directly away from the lens, as this may warp the lens.

Step 5

Place the lens in your contact lens case with contact solution. Repeat this process on the other eye.

Things You'll Need

  • Suction holder
  • Sterile contact solution
  • Contact lens case
