In a physically demanding sport like tennis, injuries are all too common. A sprained ankle is the most common injury suffered by tennis players. Andy Murray, Roger Federer and many other top professional players have sprained one or both ankles during their careers. For the serious and recreational player alike, knowing how to prevent and treat sprained ankles is important.

Why Sprained Ankles are Common in Tennis

Tennis is a sport that focuses on quick direction changes, side to side movement, short stops and quick acceleration. These patterns of movement put a considerable amount of strain on a player's joints, particularly the ankles. Many ankle sprains in tennis are a result of a roll over-type injury. In a roll over ankle sprain, a player plants her weight on one foot to arrest her momentum, but instead of stopping, rolls over her ankle, causing a sprain.

Appropriate Tennis Specific Footwear

Tennis shoes are built with a focus on lateral support. Running shoes, or cross-trainers, can significantly increase a player's chance of ankle injury. Running shoes and cross-trainers do not have the lateral stability required to protect a player's ankles from the rigors of tennis.

How to Prevent an Ankle Injury

The most effective way of preventing ankle injuries, particularly sprains, is to wear an ankle brace. Ankle braces are particularly important if a player has a history of ankle sprains. Each ankle sprain weakens the supporting ligaments, increasing the likelihood of further injury. Studies have shown that ankle braces are the most effective way of preventing ankle sprains compared with taping and other methods. Professional tennis player Andy Murray wears an ankle brace during every match he plays to avoid re-injuring his ankle.

Treating a Sprained Ankle

If a player does sprain her ankle, a simple regimen of rest, ice, elevation and compression is the best medicine for the first few days. Always consult a medical professional for advice after an injury like an ankle sprain. Physical therapy helps to reduce recovery time and decrease chance of re-injury.
