Some 7-year-old children occasionally have episodes of incontinence. Remain calm and learn different methods to decrease occurrences of the problem. Children affected by the condition often do not require medical attention. Daytime wetting occurs more frequently in girls than boys. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the rate of incontinence decreases by 15 percent of cases each year for children over the age of 5.

Step 1

Have your child visit the bathroom every two hours. Ensure this time is not rushed and your child sits on the toilet for several minutes at a time. Explain to your child's teacher and your child the importance of following this schedule. Encourage frequent toileting during the day to decrease daytime wetting incidences and urinary tract infections, advises the University of Iowa. Train the brain to understand the early signals from the bladder that it is time to use the bathroom.

Step 2

Sturdy relaxation techniques with your child to relax a closed sphincter, a common cause for daytime wetting. Learn techniques, such as biofeedback, through a trained medical professional. Explain to your child the importance and purpose of relaxation training.

Step 3

Be patient. Use a calm voice when talking to your child. Speak patiently and listen to your child, especially if she is emotionally upset about a recent episode of daytime wetting.

Step 4

Visit a kidney specialist to rule out any structural abnormalities. Discuss the symptoms your child is experiencing with the medical staff. Consider treatments such as medicine and imaging tests, such as an MRI.

Tips and Warnings

  • According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, most children naturally outgrown daytime incontinence.
