Melasma is a common skin disorder that causes a dark discoloration, usually on the face. Although melasma can affect anyone, the condition most commonly occurs in young women. According to PubMed Health, melasma is associated with female hormones. Risk factors include sun exposure, certain birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy and pregnancy. Treatment options include topical creams, chemical peels or laser treatment. Horseradish is also a traditional remedy that helps clear up certain instances of melasma.

Step 1

Apply horseradish directly to the discoloration on your face. Leave it on until it dries--for approximately 20 minutes. Repeat once a week until your skin begins to peel off. The new skin underneath should be lighter.

Step 2

Mix horseradish powder with sour cream to lighten and moisturize your skin. Combine 2 tablespoons of horseradish root powder to 1 cup of sour cream. Apply the paste to your skin and leave on for 30 minutes. Wash your face completely when finished.

Step 3

Grate 4 inches of fresh horseradish finely. Add ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar to the grated horseradish. Place the mixture in a jar with a lid. Tighten the lid and shake the mixture. Allow it to stand for two weeks. Strain the mixture using a colander. Apply the mixture to your melasma three times a day until your skin is lighter.
