Morning sickness, especially that experienced by women pregnant with twins, can be challenging. While morning sickness symptoms can range widely in severity, New York University says women who are pregnant with twins are likely to have more pronounced and debilitating symptoms. In these cases, treating the morning sickness more aggressively can ensure the condition does not lead to any life-threatening situations for the mother or fetuses. The symptoms of morning sickness are usually worse in the morning but can continue to some degree throughout the day. For mothers carrying multiples, the risk of prolonged feelings of nausea and vomiting throughout the day and into the evening hours are more likely.
Step 1
Eat bland foods before getting out of bed in the morning. Common early-morning foods that you can eat include soda crackers and dry toast. Ingesting something before getting up and walking around can quell the first feelings of nausea. If the nausea can be satiated before the day begins, there will be less of a chance that the feeling will linger.
Step 2
Consume small meals often throughout the day. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that a pregnant woman snack often, about every one to two hours. Large meals may make a pregnant woman, especially one with multiples, to feel sluggish and too full, which can lead to nausea.
Step 3
Take your prenatal vitamins at night. Supplements sometimes can cause nausea on their own. Taking them at night can help mitigate any nausea because you will be asleep as the vitamins and minerals metabolize.
Step 4
Drink ginger soda and eat ginger candies to help relieve nausea. The University of Maryland Medical Center says ginger-infused products have proven somewhat effective against morning sickness.
Step 5
Keep air flowing throughout rooms to reduce odors in the air. A woman who is pregnant with multiples may be extremely sensitive to odors. Some common offensive odors include spices like garlic and perfumes.
Step 6
Get acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture wristbands may provide some relief from morning sickness. You can also see an acupuncture specialist who treats pregnant women. However, consult your obstetrician before exploring this option.
Step 7
Ask your doctor about taking antihistamine medication for morning sickness. According to New York University research, antihistamines have been shown effective in reducing some cases of morning sickness.
