Jack LaLanne was a well-known fitness guru who made it his life’s mission to teach others about health. One of the products LaLanne endorsed was a home juice extractor that was named after him. Juicers separate the fiber of a fruit or vegetable from the juice, to provide pulp free juice that is fresh and full of nutrients. The Jack LaLanne juicer works similarly to most at-home centrifugal juice extractors.
Assembly and Disassembly
Putting the Jack LaLanne juicer together and taking it apart are not complicated jobs, but you must do it properly for the juicer to work. To assemble, start by setting the juicer base on a flat, dry surface, close to an outlet. Move the silver safety locking bar down, then fit the receptacle onto the base, with the spout facing the same direction as the locking bar. Set the filter into the receptacle, then the blade into the filter. The blade must be centered over the screw peg and tightened by turning it clockwise with the orange crescent tool provided. Place the lid on top of everything, with the pulp guard and chute facing the opposite direction of the spout. Lift the silver bar up to lock the lid in place. When you’re finished using the juicer, reverse the steps to take the juicer apart.
Operation
Once your juicer is securely assembled, you can make some juice. Plug the juicer into the outlet and cut your fruits and/or vegetables into sizes that will fit into the hopper. Turn the juicer on when the produce is cut and place a glass under the spout. Lift the plunger out of the hopper and drop pieces of fruit or vegetable into the hopper. Push the produce down into the blades with the plunger. Place more produce into the hopper and repeat until your juice is made. Use a firm, even pressure when you push the produce through, so the machine doesn’t bog down. Replace the glass with a new one quickly if it is almost full and you still have more fruits or vegetables to process.
Maintenance
Keeping the juicer clean is an important factor to keeping it in good working order. After each time you use the juicer, disassemble it and wash out each individual part with soapy water, except for the base, which needs only a wipe with a damp cloth. Clean out any pulp or juice stains before they have a chance to set in. Scoop the pulp into your compost or the garbage before fruit flies start to gather. Use the pulp from some vegetables, such as carrots, in baking recipes, such as muffins.
Safety Considerations
To keep your juicing experience safe, never submerge the base of the Jack LaLanne juicer in water. Always unplug the juicer and wait for the blades to stop spinning before you start to disassemble it or poke your finger inside for any reason. Let the juicer warm up for about 10 seconds each time, before processing fruits and vegetables. Check with your doctor if you are adding any new juices to your diet, especially if you’re on medication, or giving juices to your kids.
