A baby's cry signals anything from hunger to emotional distress, making it a challenge to figure out how to calm your baby. Assuming his physical needs, such as hunger and a dry diaper, are met, calming techniques can help soothe your crying baby. Try different methods to find a technique that works with your baby's temperament.
Motion
Motion creates a soothing feeling for some fussy babies. Start by rocking your baby in your arms. Stand and rock from side to side or sit in a chair to rock back and forth. Baby gear with rocking or vibrations, such as a baby swing or bouncy seat, also works for some babies. If you want to get out of the house or find that other motion options don't work, try a walk with your baby in the stroller or a car ride. The fresh air and change of scenery contributes to the calming effect for some babies. Keep in mind that there is a chance of the fussiness returning once the motion stops.
Sound
Soothing sounds help some babies calm down. Singing, humming or a hushing sound as you rock your baby gives her the comfort of your voice. Continuous sounds like a fan or vacuum cleaner create a soothing sensation. Try a radio in your baby's room tuned to static or play some soothing lullabies playing in the background. Noise machines play a variety of sounds such as rhythmic nature sounds that calm some babies.
Closeness
Young infants often enjoy a feeling of closeness similar to the close quarters of the womb. Try holding your baby closely to your chest as you rock and comfort him. If you want the freedom of moving around while holding your baby close, snuggle him into a baby sling. He experiences the closeness of the sling, the motion of you walking and he is close to your heartbeat like he was in the womb. Swaddling your baby in a blanket is another option to give him a sense of closeness and comfort.
Touch
Massage your baby's body to calm her with your touch. Use lavender-scented baby lotion for additional calming qualities as you massage her arms, legs and tummy. Work slowly using a gentle touch on her skin. A warm bath offers similar calming qualities because of the feel of the warm water on the skin. Use a soft washcloth and lavender baby wash to rub on your baby's skin for bath massage. Wrap your baby in a towel immediately to keep her warm, avoiding further tears.
Sucking
Sucking is a soothing action for most babies. Offer your baby a pacifier for a safe sucking option. A teething toy or similar safe toy is another option for sucking. Nursing or offering your baby a bottle may also calm him when he is upset.
