Dr. A.T.W. Simeons and Kevin Trudeau advocate different forms of the HCG diet. Dr. Simeons originally developed the protocol, but Kevin Trudeau expanded upon it to account for modern toxin issues that were not present in the 1950s when Dr. Simeons conducted his research. The "meat" of both diets, occurring in Phase Two when the weight loss occurs, is the same -- both include daily injections of human chorionic gonadotropin and a highly restricted very-low-calorie diet. But there are differences between the two methods -- your doctor will decide which one is right for you.

Phase One

Dr. Simeons' loading phase, or Phase One, lasts only two days. During those two days, you are to eat as much high-fat food as you can, to build up your fat stores in preparation for the calorie restriction to follow. Kevin Trudeau expanded the loading phase to 30 days, and developed a strict supplement protocol, exercise plan and alternative therapy schedule to follow during that period. Trudeau's loading phase protocol also includes six meals per day, mandatory twice-daily salads and a restriction on trans fats. Dr. Simeons' original protocol does not have any restrictions at all during the loading phase.

Supplements and Exercise

Dr. Simeons prohibited the use of any medication or supplement that is not medically necessary, except aspirin for headaches and the occasional laxative for constipation. Trudeau recommends extensive use of supplements, including acetyl L-carnitine, yerba mate tea, apple cider vinegar, coral calcium, coconut oil, probiotics, krill oil and digestive enzymes. He also recommends regular weight training and yoga, and mandates an hour-long outdoor walk every day. Dr. Simeons limits exercise to 20 minutes of light cardio per day, because the diet is too low in calories to fuel your body during long exercise sessions.

Organic Foods

Kevin Trudeau's HCG diet method requires you to consume only organic foods for the duration of the program. According to Trudeau, "man-made processed food will make you fat because that's what the food manufacturers have designed the food to do." He advocates buying food labeled "100% Organic" whenever possible, or at least food labeled "Organic." He claims that food labeled "Made With Organic Ingredients" is not organic enough, and that you should never purchase a food whose ingredients you cannot pronounce. Dr. Simeons' protocol does not include any restrictions on organic versus non-organic food, as long as it is a food from the approved list.

Other Treatments

Dr. Simeons recommends against massage and other types of body treatments during treatment, while Trudeau encourages them. He recommends having a colonic every two days during the loading phase, and cleansing your colon four times per year after treatment. He also recommends a heavy metal cleanse, liver cleanse, infrared saunas, suntanning, and use of an electromagnetic chaos filter. Trudeau recommends getting rid of your microwave, limiting exposure to air conditioning and fluorescent lights and listening to relaxation music. Dr. Simeons encourages you to conduct your life as normally as possible so the diet doesn't cause much disruption that may make you less likely to stick with it.
