5 Things You Need to Know About Absenteeism

5 Things You Need to Know About Absenteeism

1. Skyrocketing Costs of Absenteeism

The cost of unscheduled absenteeism is enormous for most American employers. The average cost per employee is $660 per year and upward. This is money that could easily pay for additional help or add to the employee's pay. The chain spirals when people take "mental health" breaks due to work overload. This creates more overload and stress and more absenteeism. There are many different reasons for the absenteeism, some related to the employee and others out of the hands of the employer, but some that are controllable by the employer.

2. Major Reasons for Chronic Absenteeism

Addictions to drugs or other things like gambling and alcohol are prominent causes of employee absenteeism. Along with alcohol addiction, hangovers create an absentee problem for the employer. Mental illness in the form of agoraphobia, anxiety disorder, avoidant or borderline personality disorders, depression and other psychological disorders also account for chronic absenteeism. Chronic illness is a big cause for absenteeism as are accidents and personal problems.

3. Problems on the Job

Low morale and boredom can bring on a rash of absenteeism. If you see groups of people absent from the job frequently, the problem is usually workplace related. Some reasons include lack of job satisfaction either caused by poor leadership or supervision or improper placement in the position. Stress on the job contributes to health issues and overwork contributes to the stress. Feelings of isolation created by an indifferent attitude regarding employees create disgruntled work forces. Sedentary and stressed employees have low resistance to both disease and injury from minor accidents, causing even more absenteeism.

4. Boost Morale

Show the employees that you care. Recognition for achievements reduces the absenteeism dramatically. Inexpensive items, such as personal contact from management for good work, is another morale booster. Health programs to promote wellness save money on both the cost of insurance and absenteeism. Wellness programs give free aid for addiction service, smoking cessation programs, health screening, counseling and often provide discounted or free gym membership. Bonus money for good attendance promotes less absenteeism in some people.

5. Reduce Absenteeism Through Minor Changes

Since personal family issues are one of the top reasons for absenteeism, alternative work arrangements and telecommuting are solutions to the problem. These two options also reduce absenteeism from illness that, while not serious, keeps employees home. Compressed work weeks create a more favorable attendance record. Job sharing allows partners to rely on one another without leaving the employer in the lurch. These proactive steps and arrangements can create a healthier, happier and more profitable business.
