Though usually not indicative of serious problems, menstrual cramps are a common monthly irritation for women. Nausea, headaches and fatigue may accompany this lower-abdominal discomfort. Cramps can start shortly before bleeding and can stick around until the menstrual cycle ends. While cramping may be more severe in some women than in others, the desire for relief is all the same.

Step 1

Take an over-the-counter pain medication. Certain medications such as Pamprin and Midol target multiple symptoms including bloating and pain. Ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medications may also bring relief. Follow the manufacturer's directions for dosage and read special instructions or warnings carefully.

Step 2

Lie down with a heat pad over your abdomen for 20 to 30 minutes to allow the heat to soothe the area. Soaking in a warm bath is another way to use heat if you don't have a heating pad or hot water bottle.

Step 3

Massage your abdomen gently for several minutes to help increase circulation and provide relief.

Step 4

Exercise for 15 to 30 minutes to get your blood moving and increase circulation. Perform light cardio, yoga or take a short walk. Consult a doctor before performing any exercise.

Step 5

Take supplements -- such as calcium citrate, vitamins D and E or magnesium -- to help relive and prevent the pain. Talk to your doctor about which supplements may be the best for you depending on your medical history and current medications you are taking.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid caffeine, smoking and excessive alcohol while cramping, as all of these can make it worse.
  • Talk to your doctor or gynecologist about severe, frequent and long-lasting menstrual cramps to rule out any possible underlying medical conditions that may be causing it.
