Weight loss supplements such as herbal fat burners purport to increase your metabolism or force your body to shed excess weight by burning fat. Unfortunately, these supplements are largely unregulated and can come with risks to your health. In 2008, the United States Food and Drug Administration submitted a press release warning consumers against using many herbal weight loss products. Analyses of the ingredients in 69 different products sold over the counter found active but unlisted ingredients. Additionally, some herbs, even when listed, can cause side effects. Check with your doctor before using any herbal fat burner.
Cardiovascular Side Effects
Perhaps the most common side effects of herbal fat burners are those of the cardiovascular system. The Mayo Clinic explains that many of these side effects, which can include palpitations, irregular heartbeat and cardiac arrest, are attributed to the herbal stimulants often included in fat burning products. These stimulants, such as ma huang and the banned herb ephedra, increase your heart rate and, subsequently, your metabolism for a brief time. While these types of herbs may indeed infer some weight loss benefit, the Clinic explains that the side effects to the cardiac system are hardly worth the risk.
Gastrointestinal Side Effects
Some herbal fat burners can cause discomfort to the gastrointestinal system, which includes your stomach, intestines and bowels. Stimulant herbs such as ma huang can cause stomach upset and irritation. Additionally, yohimbe, another herb frequently used in fat burning products, can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, according to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. If you have a pre-existing condition that effects your gastrointestinal system or are on medications to control any gastrointestinal problems, avoid using a supplement that contains a stimulant or yohimbe.
Psychological Side Effects
Herbal fat burners can also cause psychological side effects that generally subside once you stop using the product. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, herbs found in fat burners such as green tea can cause anxiety or make existing psychological conditions worse. This is often a result of the caffeine or other stimulant herbs found in fat burners that can counteract the effects of prescription medications used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.
Urinary Tract Side Effects
Ma huang, according to the Mayo Clinic, can cause impaired urination and the development of kidney stones. Additionally, the University of Maryland Medical Center explains that green tea should not be consumed by people with existing kidney problems. The caffeine component of green tea and other herbs used in fat burners also has a mild diuretic effect that can tax your urinary system if you have pre-existing problems. This can also lead to dehydration if you are not taking steps to stay hydrated when using a mild diuretic.
