Excess belly fat, also known as abdominal fat, is a serious health issue. According to Harvard Health Publications, excess fat around the waist is a risk factor for several medical conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and metabolic syndrome, which may in turn contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Exercising daily and eating a diet low in saturated and trans fats will help reduce belly fat. Green tea and cayenne may also help the body burn excess fat, although scientific evidence showing they can target belly fat, specifically, is lacking. Get medical advice before using either of these herbs.

Green Tea

Perhaps best known as a refreshing, astringent beverage, green tea is a rich source of compounds known as polyphenols, which may have therapeutic effects. MedlinePlus notes that green tea is sometimes used as an alternative remedy for a number of conditions, including Parkinson's disease and various forms of cancer. The University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC, reports it might also help the body to burn fat. Green tea may increase metabolism, thereby aiding weight loss. Talk to your doctor before using green tea as a fat-burning aid.

Cayenne

Cayenne, also known as capsicum, is a popular culinary spice that may also play a role in the treatment of several medical conditions, including lymphoma, headaches, rheumatoid arthritis and high cholesterol. UMMC notes it is sometimes used as a weight-loss aid because it helps the body burn fat. However, clinical studies evaluating its ability to burn excess belly fat, specifically, are lacking. Consult a health-care professional before incorporating cayenne into your weight-loss program.

Administration

As its name suggests, green tea is common as a beverage, although green tea extract is also available in capsules or tablets from drugstores or health-food stores. Guidance regarding a suitable dose to help burn belly fat is lacking, although your doctor or dietitian might be able to advise you on an appropriate dose. UMMC Center notes that 6 to 10 grams of cayenne is sometimes taken with each meal to help burn fat. However, this is only a general guideline; ask your doctor what is right for you.

Safety Considerations

Green tea and cayenne may cause side effects or interact with other drugs. Do not drink more than 5 cups of green tea daily unless your doctor advises it, because it may cause tremors, irritability, nausea, restlessness and headaches. Cayenne may cause side effects such as increased sweating, gastrointestinal irritation and flushing. Talk to your doctor before using either of these herbs alongside other medicines.
