The Right Way to Walk on a NordicTrack

NordicTrack motorized treadmills come in a variety of models, each with its own unique set of features. However, certain characteristics are common throughout the product line, including the console's control scheme, which ensures a consistent operating procedure. When using a NordicTrack treadmill, make sure to follow the included instructions in order to minimize the risk of injury, and also maintain a proper walking form in order to get a safe and effective workout.

Step 1

Clip the treadmill's safety key lanyard onto your waistband. Step onto the rails installed on either side of the walking belt. Hold onto the handles that protrude from the treadmill's console assembly. Insert the safety key into the matching slot located on the front edge of the console assembly.

Step 2

Locate the button on the console assembly labeled "ENTER." Find the up and down arrow buttons installed to the left of the "ENTER" button. Use the arrow buttons to select the desired workout. Press the button labeled "START." The treadmill's walking belt begins to move at a slow speed.

Step 3

Step onto the walking belt and begin walking. Match your pace to the belt's speed. Maintain an upright posture and keep your head up, such that you are looking straight ahead. Lift your hands off of the treadmill's supports and allow them to swing back and forth in an alternating rhythm. End each step by making contact with your heel first, then push off of the walking belt with your toes. Maintain a regular breathing rhythm.

Step 4

Exercise at a slow pace for approximately five to 10 minutes, then use the treadmill's "SPEED" settings to increase the speed of the walking belt to a comfortable, but challenging, pace.

Step 5

Step onto the walking deck's side rails periodically and grip the treadmill's heart rate sensor, attached to the front edge of the console unit. Examine the heart rate readout on the console's display and compare it with the appropriate target heart rate listed on your heart rate chart. Adjust the walking belt's speed until you reach your target heart rate.

Step 6

Continue exercising at your target heart rate for no longer than 20 minutes, then use the speed buttons to slow down the walking belt. Walk at a slow pace for five to 10 minutes to cool down, then step onto the side rails and remove the safety key from the console unit. Remove the safety key lanyard's clip from your waistband.
