Combination skin occurs when there are two different types of skin on your face at the same time. You may have dry, flaky spots on your skin while also having oily spots on your face. You might find it hard to treat your skin because facial cleansers are usually targeted to a specific skin type. But there is a way to improve your skin and achieve a more balanced skin type.

Step 1

Wash your face one to two times daily with a gentle cleanser. Avoid face wash that has benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid; these can create more dryness on your face. Use lukewarm water and pat your face dry with a clean towel.

Step 2

Follow your face wash with a mild facial toner. Read the label and avoid products with alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, fragrance and citrus oil; these products can irritate your skin.

Step 3

Use an oil-free moisturizer that also protects your skin from the sun. Use a moisturizer with at least SPF 15. Apply a dime size to your hands and gently rub in all over your face.

Step 4

Use noncomedogenic makeup only. This type of makeup will not clog your pores and is safer to use on your skin. Remove all traces of makeup at the end of each day.

Step 5

Exfoliate your face at least once a week. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, improves the tone and texture or your face and reveals healthy skin. Choose an exfoliating cream that has added moisturizers.

Step 6

Treat specific areas of your face before going to bed. Apply a nighttime moisturizing cream to your flaky skin. Use a tissue to blot excess oil off your face and apply a spot treatment to any blemishes in your oily spots.

Things You'll Need
