Tingling and numbness in your fingers is an abnormal condition and could be a sign of something more serious. There are many possible causes for this sensation. The condition can often lead to pain or discomfort, or it could be a warning of a much more serious ailment that is not directly related to the fingers. If this condition seems serious or continues for a long duration, contact a doctor for treatment.

Circulatory Reasons

Tingling in the fingers can sometimes be caused by the lack of blood flow in your hands. This can happen if your hands are exposed to extremely cold temperatures or affected by frostbite. It can also be a symptom of peripheral artery disease, which is a narrowing of arteries due to the buildup of fat and cholesterol. There is also a rare condition called Raynaud's phenomenon, which is a disorder that causes narrowing of blood vessels in the fingers and toes.

Orthopedic Reasons

Tingly and numb fingers can also be caused by orthopedic conditions. A fractured or broken bone could irritate a nerve or cause nerve damage. Carpal tunnel syndrome will also cause sufferers to experience tingling in the fingers. Tingly fingers is also a symptom of other issues like a neck injury, herniated disk or cervical spondylosis. It can also be the result of nerve entrapment or compression of the ulnar nerve in the arm.

Neurological Reasons

There are also many neurological reasons for tingly fingers. It is one of many possible symptoms in alcoholism. Diabetics with high blood sugar levels will sometimes feel numbness and tingling in the fingers. It has also been associated with lead poisoning as well. Some other medical conditions associated with tingly fingers are hypothyroidism, multiple sclerosis, neuroma of the finger, peripheral neuropathy, spinal cord injury, a tumor, or stroke.

Vitamin Deficiency

Lack of vitamins like B1 or Thiamine and B12 or Cyanocobalamine can also cause tingling in the fingers. People like vegetarians or those who do not have a healthy diet consisting of vegetables, fish, nuts, and fruits can sometimes suffer from numbness and tingling in the fingers.
