Caffeine is so easily accessible in food and drinks, it can be difficult to eliminate from your diet. It can be particularly difficult to get rid of caffeine if you depend on it during your daily routine or have a caffeine addiction. You should always consult a medical professional if you're experiencing significant caffeine addiction symptoms or are having difficulty avoiding caffeine.

Step 1

Maintain a diary. You can't eliminate caffeine from your life until you're sure where it's coming from in the first place. Start by writing down all the food, drinks and medications you take every day in a diary.

Step 2

Identify caffeinated products. Common drinks such as cola or coffee contain caffeine, but so do some foods and medications, so keep track of everything. If you're not sure, research the product online or check the product's packaging to see if it contains caffeine.

Step 3

Substitute noncaffeinated versions. Drinks such as coffee, tea and cola often come in a decaffeinated version. Substitute your daily caffeinated drinks with their decaffeinated counterparts.

Step 4

Remove caffeinated foods. If you can't find decaffeinated versions, remove the caffeinated product from your diet and substitute something else. If, for example, you can't find a noncaffeinated cola, consider replacing it with water, decaffeinated tea or fruit juice.

Step 5

Exercise and eat healthy. Weaning yourself from caffeine can leave you agitated and restless. You can engage in regular exercise to combat the effects of the withdrawal, as well as eat a balanced diet to ensure your body has the nutrition it needs to keep you going and not fall back on the caffeine.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you can't stop your caffeine habit immediately, consider taking a gradual approach. Try decreasing the number of caffeinated drinks you have per day at first, then further decrease your intake over the coming weeks.
