If you have oily skin, your face appears shiny or greasy during the day. Some people may experience increased oil in their T-zone, which includes your forehead, nose and chin, while others are oily all over their face. Excess oil build-up on your face can lead to increased blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. With good skin care techniques you can make your face less oily through the day.

Step 1

Wash your face two to three times a day. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you use an oil-free cleanser with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to prevent breakouts. Wash your face immediately after exercise to avoid letting sweat soak into your pores and create more oil.

Step 2

Apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer to your face after washing -- it won't clog pores. Choose a moisturizer that has sun protection in it to help prevent sun damage to your skin.

Step 3

Avoid touching your face throughout the day. Try not to let your hair hang in your face or allow your face to touch the phone while you use it. Your hands, hair and objects carry dirt and oil that can be transferred to your skin.

Step 4

Exfoliate your skin once or twice a week. Exfoliating your skin removes dead skin cells, cleans off dirt and reveals healthy skin beneath the dead skin cells. Don't exfoliate when you have a breakout -- the texture of the exfoliant can irritate your pimples.

Step 5

Use tissues to absorb excess oil during the day. Blot your face with a dry tissue when you see any shiny spots appear.

Step 6

Avoid using makeup or use only oil-free, non-comedogenic brands. This type of makeup is designed for people with oily skin or acne-prone skin. Some brands even have acne-fighting medicine in their products, which can help prevent breakouts.
