"The Bran Plan Diet" is a diet-plan book based on the benefits of dietary fiber. The book covers the healing properties of particular bran types, and includes more than 40 fiber-rich, low-fat recipes for pasta, seafood, bean dishes and muffins. The primary author, Dr. Oliver Alabaster, is a clinical professor of medicine at George Washington University. He has more than 20 years of cancer-prevention and health-research experience.

The Book

"The Bran Plan Diet" is the first comprehensive high-fiber diet since "The Truth About Fiber in Your Food" was published in 1972. "The Bran Plan Diet" features a self-made "bran cocktail" supplement, as well as a 28-day menu plan for weight loss. It's notable that fiber consumption has decreased in most of the industrialized world over the last 100 years.

Background

The book finds its source in studies from the 1960s that indicated the nutritional benefits of consuming whole grains and bran. When consumed sufficiently, which is higher than the present Recommended Daily Intake, bran is one of the rich sources of insoluble dietary fiber that is vital for intestinal health. Fiber has many dietary benefits, according to "The Truth About Fiber in Your Food," including reducing levels of bad cholesterol, or LDL, and promoting improved gastrointestinal health.

Book Basis

"The Bran Plan Diet" addresses the recognized benefits of insoluble fiber like bran, and endorses an incorporation of bran into everyone's daily diet. This is hardly a new idea in health or medicine. According to the Mayo Clinic, fiber has several important roles in maintaining health, including maintaining bowel health, lowering blood glucose and LDL cholesterol levels and aiding in weight loss.
