Lymph is a clear fluid carried by the lymphatic system, an important part of the immune system. Improper buildup of lymph can be the result of poor lifestyle or diet. Swollen lymph nodes can also be the result of lymph buildup, potentially leading to pain or discomfort. Remedies practiced in Ayurveda, India's medical system, may help in lymph drainage. Consult with your doctor before practicing Ayurveda.
Copper Water
Drinking copper water regularly can help the function of the lymphatic system, according to Ayurvedic doctor and founder of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Vasant Lad. To prepare the copper water, wash 10 pennies in lime water and then place them in 1 qt. of boiling water. Boil the water until half of it is gone. Allow the water to cool to room temperature and take 2 tsp. of the copper water twice daily until your lymphatic system regains balance.
Ayurvedic Yoga
Specific poses practiced in yoga, an ancient system of holistic health, may promote lymph drainage. Try forward bending poses such as Janu Sirsasana, Uttanasana, Prasasita Padottanasana and Adhomukha Paschimottanasana to improve the flow of lymph. Keep your back straight in forward bending poses to avoid injury and optimize lymph drainage. Practice these poses regularly and consult with an experienced yoga instructor to ensure proper alignment.
Pranayama
Some Ayurvedic practitioners may recommend the practice of pranayama, or breathing exercises to promote lymph drainage. Viloma 2 Pranayama, also known as interrupted breathing cycle, may help regulate the immune system. While in a comfortable seated or lying position, inhale and exhale naturally for a few cycles. After your next exhale, pause for two seconds. Continue to practice this breathing pattern for up to 10 minutes.
Cleansing Practices
Cleansing methods are often practiced in Ayurveda to help the body restore balance. One Ayurvedic cleansing exercise calls for the use of a neti pot to cleanse excess mucous from the body. Once you purchase a neti pot, mix 1 tsp. of noniodized salt with warm water in the pot. Drain the mixture through each nostril while bending over a sink and leaning to one side. Over time, the practice of neti can help regulate the immune system.
