Acne is the most prevalent skin condition in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. For some people, it can strike as early as your preteen years and persist until you're well into your 40s. Body acne on your back and chest can be more stubborn, because skin in these areas is thicker than on your face, which makes it more difficult for products to penetrate. Still, there are effective remedies to fix acne in these areas, but consult a dermatologist for more advice.

Try Topical Remedies

Over-the-counter acne products, such as those with benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, help to prevent oiliness and kill bacteria that cause acne. Considering that acne on your back can be particularly stubborn --- because skin on your back is thicker --- you may need to use a stronger concentration of these products. If they're not effective, a prescription-strength topical acne remedy may be in order. A dermatologist can give you more advice on which products to use.

Cleanse Carefully

Acne isn't caused by dirt so there's no need to scrub your skin with abrasive cleansers or pads. However, because the skin on your back and chest is less fragile than the skin on your face, you can use stronger cleansers. Use cleansers for body acne or those with active ingredients, such as benzoyl peroxide. Wash your back and chest twice a day instead using a gentle, circular motion. If you need to use a brush to reach your back, use one with soft bristles. It's also a good idea to wash your back and chest if you've been sweating a lot. Sweat increases oiliness and bacterial activity in your skin. Wait 10 to 15 minutes before applying a topical acne medication.

Moisturize Carefully

Avoid using greasy or oily body lotions or creams that increase oiliness in your skin and clog your pores even more than usual. Instead, use only moisturizing products that are labeled "water-based," "oil-free" or "non-comedogenic." Moisturizers with hydroxy acids can also be beneficial, because these acids help to dry up pimples and slough away dead skin cells that can clog your pores.

Change Your Laundry Habits

If you're used to wearing your clothes more than once without laundering them, think again. Oil and dead skin cells can seep into your clothing and make their way back onto your chest and back. Wash clothing after wearing it once. Use mild detergents without fragrances or other chemicals that can possibly aggravate your acne. Also, double-rinse your clothing to get rid of any detergent residue.
