Hirsutism, a condition which causes women to grow unwanted facial hair, is the result of high levels of the male hormone testosterone in the body. The result is often embarrassing and painful for the women who suffer with the condition. Whether you've been diagnosed with hirsutism or simply have unwanted facial hair, shaving isn't always the best option. Instead, you can minimize the appearance of the hair without resorting to more drastic hair removal measures.

Step 1

Test any product you intend to use on your face on an inconspicuous area instead. Products made for hair removal or alteration are notoriously irritating to the sensitive skin on your face and often cause redness, itching, rashes and other irritation. Before you use a product on your face, place a small amount on the inside of your arm and follow the package directions. Wait 24 hours to watch for a reaction and continue only if your skin is unaffected.

Step 2

Bleach the hair on your face using a bleach cream kit from the store. Facial bleach is less concentrated than other cosmetic bleach, making it safer to use on your face. Most facial bleach kits involve covering your facial hair for a predetermined amount of time with the product before rinsing it away. The bleach lightens the hair so it's less noticeable overall.

Step 3

Pluck the hair from the root rather than shaving it off. While the idea that shaved hair grows back darker is a myth, it does look darker because of the blunt edges shaving causes. When removed from the root, the hair grows back more slowly and with a more natural, tapered end, which is less noticeable than a bluntly cut hair.

Step 4

Wear makeup to help cover the dark pigment of your facial hair. Choose liquid makeup over powder, since powder clings to individual hairs and makes them even more noticeable. When applying makeup, always apply in a downward motion. Applying upward causes the hair to stand up and off of your face, while applying downward helps the hair lie flat for a less prominent appearance.

Step 5

Schedule an appointment with your doctor to talk about your hair growth. If a hormone imbalance is the culprit, hormone replacement therapy is often used to combat the effects. It's also an ideal opportunity to discuss safe, long-term hair removal options, such as laser hair removal.
