How to Reduce Hair Growth by Nutrition

Hirsutism is characterized as excessive hair growth. In women, it typically occurs on the upper lip, chin, chest or abdomen and is usually the result of high levels of male sex hormones or a symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. Women diagnosed with hirsutism may look for nutritional remedies to reduce hair growth. Luckily, a variety of herbal treatments and food products may help to lessen the appearance of body hair.

Step 1

Consult your health-care provider regarding hirsutism and possible treatment options. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that herbs such as black cohosh, saw palmetto and chasteberry contain anti-androgenic properties to lessen the appearance of body hair. If you want to try any of these herbs, discuss medications you are on with your health-care provider to ensure the herbs don't interact with the medications.

Step 2

Sip on spearmint tea to treat mild cases of hirsutism. Spearmint tea not only contains anti-androgen properties for reduced hair growth, but the menthol component in spearmint tea serves as a relaxant and may help to ease stress and anxiety. UMMC recommends one cup of spearmint tea twice daily.

Step 3

Eat fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, such as blueberries, cherries, tomatoes, squash and bell peppers. The antioxidants may help individuals to reach a healthy weight, which may lower the level of androgens in the body.

Step 4

Avoid processed or refined foods and alcohol. The elimination of unhealthy foods from the diet may help to promote a healthy weight and reduce androgen levels.

Step 5

Hydrate with six to eight glasses of water each day and participate in a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity for five days each week. Not only will the water and physical activity flush toxins from the body, but they will also help to promote weight maintenance to reduce levels of androgens.
