Whether you have African-American hair, European hair or a mixed race hair texture, vitamins and minerals are needed to keep the scalp and hair healthy. A deficiency in certain vitamins and minerals may cause hair loss in any hair type. Vitamin supplements formulated for hair growth will work for any hair type, including African- American textured hair.

Multivitamins

Multivitamins are sold in several combinations and are used during pregnancy, menopause and different stages of life. Multivitamins are also formulated for specific areas of the body such as the heart, bones, skin, eyes and hair. Complete multivitamin formulas contain all of the essential vitamins and minerals needed to maintain hair strength and to promote its growth.

Fat-soluble Vitamins

Multivitamin formulas that contain fat-soluble vitamins and antioxidants vitamins A and E can help maintain good hair growth. Vitamin A helps boost the immune system, which in turn contributes to uninterrupted hair growth. Vitamin E increases circulation to the scalp by increasing oxygen saturation in the cells. The recommended daily allowance of vitamin A is 900 mcg for men and 700 mcg for women, according to the Harvard Health Publications. The recommended daily allowance of vitamin E is 15 mg for both men and women.

Water-soluble Vitamins

Vitamin C, is a vitamin best known for its ability to ward off the common cold and boost the immune system. This vitamin is naturally found in most fruits, however it can also be obtained through taking a multivitamin supplement. Vitamin C assists in hair growth by encouraging good circulation to the scalp and hair follicles.

Considerations

Eat foods that contain vitamin A by increasing your consumption of seeds, potatoes or carrots. Vitamin E is found in nuts and healthy oils. Eating healthy meals can help maintain the balance of vitamins and minerals in your body, which in turn boosts hair growth. Before taking a multivitamin supplement or hair vitamin supplement contact your physician. If you have traction alopecia caused by wearing tight braids or using chemical products, hair loss may be irreversible.
