Apple cider vinegar seems to be the go-to cure for many health problems such as heartburn and high cholesterol. Some even link apple cider vinegar with preventing and treating hair loss. There isn't very much medical science to back up these claims, but it is a generally harmless home remedy that you may wish to try. That being said, consult with your doctor before treating hair loss with apple cider vinegar.
Hair Loss Causes
Hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons. Pattern baldness is a hereditary condition that causes hair loss in a horseshoe shape. Other causes can include hair follicle inflammation, autoimmune disorders, having just given birth, being under stress and malnutrition, says MayoClinic.com. Apple cider vinegar can't help with these forms of hair loss. However, it may help with hair loss caused by bacteria or fungus such as ringworm, according to Paul C. Bragg, Ph.D. and author of "Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar: Miracle Health System."
Apple Cider Vinegar Treatment
A topical treatment using apple cider vinegar can help with hair loss, according to Bragg. He suggests combining 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of water and a dash of cayenne pepper and putting it on your scalp before shampooing.
Effect on Hair Follicles
Apple cider vinegar may have an effect on your hair follicles and encourage growth. According to an article published by Alive.com in 2002, apple cider vinegar encourages increased blood flow to the hair follicles because it improves overall circulation. The greater the circulation, the more nutrients will reach your hair follicles and encourage proper growth.
Warning
For most, applying vinegar to the skin mixed with water shouldn't cause irritation. However, applying it undiluted could cause irritation and inflammation, says Bragg. Apply it to a small area first to ensure a bad reaction won't develop. If redness, itching, or sores develop, discontinue use and see a doctor immediately.
