Giving birth naturally provides a sense of empowerment to the new mother and minimizes potential side effects for the baby, but it can be painful. Planning ahead is key to having a successful natural delivery, but you should also be prepared to alter your plan if your chosen coping technique isn't working for you during the birth. Having a few different pain-relief techniques in your birth plan helps you get through the most difficult parts as comfortably as possible and get you to the point you're most eagerly awaiting: the moment you get to hold your newborn in your arms.
Step 1
Develop a birth plan and discuss it with your doctor or midwife. Having a birth plan lets your caregivers know that you don't want unnecessary drugs during labor so you don't have to worry about telling them when you are already in the throes of contractions.
Step 2
Take a class on breathing techniques and other methods to help you cope with labor pains a few months before your due date. Lamaze technique and Bradley method are two well-established types of birthing classes offered through hospitals, community centers and private organizations across the U.S. These classes offer instruction in a variety of techniques to use while giving birth.
Step 3
Walk around when labor begins. Walking can help labor progress more quickly and ease the pain of early labor.
Step 4
Practice progressive relaxation, in which you tense and then relax each part of your body, one section after another.
Step 5
Rely on the support of your partner or birthing coach. Having someone cheer you on and remind you of your coping techniques is vital to keeping you on track during labor. Consider hiring a professional doula for this role, since women that have professional support through labor are less likely to need pain medication during labor and delivery.
Step 6
Try a variety of positions. This can include standing, squatting, kneeling, getting on all fours, sitting on a toilet or birthing ball, leaning on your partner or rocking in a chair.
Step 7
Get a massage. A massage can be especially effective for easing the pain of back labor.
Step 8
Distract yourself. Use music, movies, video games or conversation to keep your mind off the pain of contractions.
Step 9
Immerse yourself in water. Sitting or floating in a jacuzzi or birthing pool helps reduce the pressure on your body during labor and can help you feel more comfortable.
Step 10
Hypnotize yourself. Hypnosis childbirth classes can teach you methods for inducing self-hypnosis during labor and could be effective for reducing or eliminating labor pain.
