Hanging a punching bag from overhead joists is not difficult for the average do-it-yourself enthusiast. But a few concerns must be addressed. A 2-inch or thicker wood joist can support the weight of a punching bag, but lateral forces generated during workouts can split the wood. You resolve this problem by installing braces at each side of the joist. In addition, you must ensure the supporting joist is drilled correctly for an eyebolt. Many tool rental centers have drill guides for drilling wood joists. Obtain the guide and organize the parts needed to hang a punching bag from joists.

Step 1

Stand an A-frame ladder at the area of the support joist where the bag will hang.

Step 2

Position the drill guide at the lower edge of the joist and align it directly vertical. Attach the drill guide to the joist by tightening the integrated clamps against both sides of the joist by hand.

Step 3

Set up a power drill with a 12-inch drill bit extension. Fit a 1/2-inch drill bit in the extension and tighten the fixing screw with an Allen key. For joists taller than 12 inches, attach a second extension to the first and fit the bit in the second extension.

Step 4

Put on your safety glasses. Insert the tip of the bit into the drill port on the guide and drill the joist for an eyebolt. Set the drill aside and detach the guide from the joist.

Step 5

Install a 3-inch eyebolt into the hole in the supporting joist from below. Put a washer and nut on the upper end of the bolt at the top of the joist. Tighten the nut securely with a deep socket and a ratchet.

Step 6

Mark locations on the supporting joist and adjacent joists for lateral bracing 12 inches each way from the eyebolt.

Step 7

Measure the distance between the supporting joist and the joists at each side. Cut four pieces of 2-inch-by-4-inch utility lumber to length with a circular saw.

Step 8

Position a brace between the supporting joist and the adjacent joist at one side and align your marks. Flush the 2-inch-thick edge of the brace with the bottom of the joists.

Step 9

Install the brace with 16-penny framing nails and a framing hammer. Drive two nails though the face of each joist and into the ends of the brace. Install the remaining braces at your marks in the same way.

Step 10

Fit the S-hook for the punching bag chain or strap into the eyebolt. Ask an assistant to hold the bag in place and hang the bag from the hook.

Tips and Warnings

  • Select an eyebolt that is 2 inches longer than the vertical width of the joist to allow ample threads for the nut. Cutting the braces 1/16 inch longer than your measurement allows you to wedge them into place for nailing. Ask an assistant to spot the ladder when working on joists.
