When skin peels, it's usually because you have been in the sun for too long. Rather than simply tanning, it is likely that you received a sunburn. The best way to prevent your skin from peeling is to protect it before you go out into the sun. Expose your skin to the sun for short bits at a time, starting with 10 minutes and gradually increasing the time. If you're already tanned, however, you can still try to minimize your skin's damage and peeling.

Step 1

Take a shower with cool water to prevent skin irritation and use a soft cloth and shower gel to wash the area. Liquid gel is gentler on your skin than a hard piece of soap would be. If your skin is already peeling, rub it gently with the cloth to remove those parts that are loose. This might help prevent the peel from extending and taking more skin along with it.

Step 2

Pat your skin dry after a shower rather than rubbing it dry, or allow it to air dry if possible. Don't apply the towel too harshly, as this will worsen the peeling. Don't shower every day either, as this further dries out your skin.

Step 3

Moisturize your skin two or three times a day. If your skin looks red and irritated after being in the sun, apply a thick cream or body lotion to it. Don't rub too hard; simply apply a thin layer and wait until your skin absorbs it. Repeat a few times a day.

Step 4

Protect your skin from further sun exposure to avoid further irritation, which can lead to skin peeling. Wear long sleeves if you have to, or at least a loose sweater or jacket during those times that you're outside.

Step 5

Drink plenty of water. This will hydrate your skin and help it regain the moisture lost due to the sunburn.

Tips and Warnings

  • You might not be able to completely stop the peeling once it starts, but you can slow it down by taking care of your skin.
