Nasal congestion, commonly known as a "stuffy nose," is caused by an inflammation of the nasal tissues and vasculature with or without discharge. The most common cause of congestion is either a viral or bacterial infection. In infants, congestion can be a serious problem, but in toddlers and older children, it is mostly an inconvenience. Make sure to check that your child's nostrils are free of foreign objects. You never know when your 2-year-old might stick a marble up his nose.

Step 1

With your 2-year-old lying flat on his back -- his head elevated on a pillow -- drip two to three drops of an over-the-counter saline solution into each nostril. Wait one minute, then have the child lie on his stomach. Help him wipe away nasal discharge with a tissue.

Step 2

Use an infant nasal aspirator -- a bulb syringe -- to suction away mucus. Compress the bulb to remove air, gently insert the pointed end into your child's nostril and release the bulb. Clean the syringe between uses.

Step 3

Run a vaporizer in your child's room at night and give him a warm bath. Heat and humidity often help alleviate congestion.

Step 4

Increase your 2-year-old's nap time and put him to bed earlier at night. A few hours of extra sleep will help his immune system combat infection.

Step 5

Place books under the legs at the head of your child's bed, making sure the bed remains stable. Having his head elevated and his body angled will make sleep more comfortable.

Things You'll Need
