Hypothyroidism and thyroiditis are terms used to describe sluggish thyroid function caused by a decline in the production of thyroid hormones. These hormones are responsible for proper metabolic function. When the hormone production declines, you may find yourself gaining weight rapidly, as your body's ability to burn fat and expend energy declines. Weight loss is possible yet difficult with just diet and exercise alone. Before attempting to lose weight, consult your physician about medication interactions and diet plans that suit your treatment plan.

Step 1

Alternate exercise routines frequently. Combine cardiovascular workouts such as aerobics and jogging with weightlifting routines. This keeps you motivated and helps increase your belly fat-burning potential. When your thyroid is not working at peak performance, you must keep your heart rate up to push your metabolism.

Step 2

Take all medications as prescribed by your doctor. Thyroid medications are commonly prescribed to provide your body with synthetic thyroid hormones and promote natural hormone production. According to the American Thyroid Association, when patients stop taking medications, lost weight can be regained.

Step 3

Speak to your doctor about iodine supplements to help regulate your thyroid and lose belly fat. When your thyroid is sluggish, it may be due to an iodine deficiency. Supplements are available over the counter at your local health food and vitamin shops. Do not take any supplements without your doctor's approval.

Step 4

Avoid high-fiber foods and excess soy when taking medication for your thyroid. These foods can inhibit the medication's efforts and sabotage your weight loss. According to Medline Plus, you should also avoid multivitamins and calcium supplements when undergoing medical treatment for thyroid disease and weight loss.

Step 5

Eat a healthy, balanced, low-calorie diet. Although diet and exercise alone may not be effective in helping you lose stubborn belly fat when suffering thyroid disease, they do help prevent high calorie intake. The key to any diet is to take in less calories than you burn. By eating plenty of fresh fruits and veggies teamed with lean proteins, you can help support your thyroid function and regulate weight loss.
