Though they are delicious alone as a snack, citrus fruits can add a sweet and tangy taste to many foods and dishes. Void of fat and cholesterol and filled with fiber, citrus fruits are also a source of numerous essential vitamins and minerals, including Vitamins C and B-6, calcium, potassium, folate, thiamin, niacin, magnesium, phosophorus, pantothenic acid, riboflavin and copper. Get creative and incorporate oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes into your dishes for a culinary -- and nutritious -- treat.

Step 1

Saute fresh baby spinach in 1 tbsp. olive oil, salt to taste and the pulp and juice from 1/2 of a fresh lemon. Cook until spinach is slightly wilted and serve immediately.

Step 2

Add fresh peeled grapefruit slices to your tossed salad as another way to eat citrus with food. This adds vitamins and a sweet and sour flavor to mixed greens. Lightly cover with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

Step 3

Cut and peel 2 tangerines and mix with 1 cup corn kernels that are cooked, 1/2 cup diced avocado, 1/2 cup black beans, 1/2 cup green bell pepper and salt and pepper to taste. Serve with chips, in a wrap or cooked into a quesadilla.

Step 4

Stir-fry pork tenderloin slices with peeled tangerine quarters, spicy Thai sauce, chopped bok choy, fresh minced ginger and soy sauce as another alternative. Serve on top of rice.

Step 5

Mix fresh orange and grapefruit sections with plain or vanilla yogurt for a quick and nutritious breakfast.

Step 6

Make a fresh papaya-lime smoothie by combining 1 cup fresh, diced papaya, juice from 1/2 of a fresh lime, 1 cup plain yogurt and 2 tbsp. honey in a blender. Mix until smooth.

Step 7

Combine 1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice with 1 cup fresh squeezed tangerine juice, 5 tbsp. honey and 1/4 cup soy sauce and spread on top of baked, broiled or grilled chicken about 5 minutes before it is finished cooking. Serve extra sauce on the plate with the chicken.
