The foot is susceptible to different injuries when running. These can be isolated injuries or chronic in nature and can be influenced by many factors, including the type of footwear used and the type of running performed. Neuromas are nerve-related injuries that can develop in the foot, complicating your ability to run races or even run at all.

Cause

Neuromas result from pinching or other irritation in the nerves in your foot, resulting in a thickening of the nerve. This is often caused by poor running mechanics, according to the website Run the Planet. A common neuroma is the Morton's neuroma, which develops between the third and fourth metatarsals in the foot, although neuromas can develop elsewhere.

Symptoms

You may first notice tenderness in your foot and possibly numbness between the metatarsals or in the toes. More advanced neuromas may be marked by pain, numbness, burning and/or tingling in the foot. Pain may increase when you stand on the foot, and you may experience shooting pains at night.

Treatment

Neuromas need proper care to heal. Metatarsal pads can be placed under the balls of your feet to cushion the nerve and let it heal. Depending on your foot type, you may need arch supports or insoles to improve the quality of your footwear. Severe neuromas may require medical attention and a cortisone shot. Surgery is possible but is usually saved as a last resort when pain is very intense. A foot specialist may be needed to guide you toward the right treatment.

Running With a Neuroma

Although you can run with a neuroma, you may only be exacerbating the pain and the condition of the neuroma, which can lead to the development of scar tissue. It is better to take time off from running while the neuroma heals, but if you are unable to do so or choose not to, insoles or pads can reduce irritation to the neuroma and allow you to continue running.
