The baseball glove dates back to the 1870s, when the gloves were made from simple pieces of leather and were designed to cover the palm of the hand. However, as the game has evolved through the years, so has the baseball glove. The baseball gloves are now designed for various positions and playing abilities with different materials and sizes. The wide range of sizes can be confusing but is essential for performance while following the rules.

Measurement

Glove size is typically expressed with one measurement in inches. This single measurement refers to the distance between the pocket and glove tip. To measure the baseball glove, use a flexible tape measure to determine the length. Start the tape measure at the top of the index finger and run the tape measure down the inside of the pocket to the heal of the glove.

Position-Specific Gloves

The different baseball glove sizes are designed to fit the demands of different players and positions. For example, middle infielders use small gloves to maximize hand quickness with the ability for quick ball transfers. Outfielders, however, choose larger gloves to catch fly balls. As a general rule, infielders choose gloves measuring 10 to 12 inches, while outfielders choose a 12-inch glove.

Rules

Each league may enforce specific rules for the size of the baseball glove, but Section 1.00, Objectives of the Game, in the Major League rulebook defines the maximum glove sizes for each position. Fielders are limited to a glove measuring no more than 12 inches from tip to the bottom edge of the glove. The rulebook also limits a fielder's glove to no more than 7.75 inches in width.

Youth

Youth baseball players require specific equipment that matches the strength and ability levels of the players to maximize performance. As a general rule, the size of the baseball glove for youth players should match the strength level of the player instead of focusing on the position. A properly sized glove allows the youth player to learn the proper fundamentals and techniques.
