How to Take Amoxicillin and Zinc

Amoxicillin is a prescription antibiotic medication and is used to treat bacterial conditions such as pneumonia and bronchitis. Zinc is an essential trace element and is often used to boost the immune system and treat common colds. Consult with your physician before taking any vitamin supplements and take all prescription medication as prescribed. Zinc can decrease the amount of antibiotics your body absorbs and should be taken at a different time than you take your antibiotics.

Step 1

Read the label on your amoxicillin prescription for the frequency and dosage amount. It is usually taken every eight to 12 hours. If it is in liquid form, shake the bottle of amoxicillin to mix contents evenly.

Step 2

Swallow pill forms of amoxicillin with water. Drink liquid forms and chewable forms of amoxicillin should be well chewed before they are swallowed. Amoxicillin can be taken with or without food. If you notice stomach upset, try taking it with a small meal.

Step 3

Wait two hours before taking your zinc supplement. A lozenge form of zinc should be dissolved in the mouth when cold symptoms are present.

Tips and Warnings

  • Zinc should be taken at least two hours after or four to six hours before your dose of amoxicillin. Make sure to adjust your zinc intake within that time frame. Do not adjust your amoxicillin dose. To make remembering medication times easier, take each medication at the same time each day.
  • High doses or large amounts of zinc can be dangerous and can interact with other medications and conditions. Consult with your physician regarding the recommended dosage and how often to take it. Do not stop taking your amoxicillin until you finish your prescription or are advised by your physician to discontinue the medication.
