High blood pressure is a common medical condition that occurs when the blood rushes through the arteries with too much force behind it, placing unnecessary strain on arterial walls. This can damage the walls over time and lead to heart disease. There is some evidence that vinegar can be a high blood pressure remedy.
Vinegar as Home Remedy
Vinegar is used in a variety of home remedies. According to Dr. Earl Mindell, author of "Dr. Earl Mindell's Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar," vinegar can treat just about any condition including fungal infections and digestive problems like colitis due to its high nutrient content and acidity. Mindell also notes that vinegar could lower the blood pressure in some people.
Acetic Acid
Vinegar might be able to lower high blood pressure due to its acetic acid content. According to a medical review published in "Medscape General Medicin," by Carol S. Johnston, PhD, in 2006, rats with high blood pressure that received acetic acid as a supplement experienced reduced blood pressure over time. Though a promising result, this study has yet to be replicated on humans.
Quercetin
Another ingredient present in vinegar that may improve blood pressure is quercetin. This substance is an antioxidant found in apples. According to a study published in "The Journal of Nutrition," in 2007, people with mild high blood pressure received 730 mg of quercetin a day and experienced a drop in overall blood pressure.
Medical Care
Even though there is some evidence that drinking vinegar could help lower blood pressure, this does not constitute a treatment substitute. In fact, if you have high blood pressure, which is a consistent reading of 140/90 or higher, you should see a doctor to get prescription medications. Following a healthy diet and exercise regimen can also help decrease your blood pressure level.
