If you have diabetes, you will most likely experience hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, periodically. This can occur if you have not taken enough insulin, if you are sick, if you have eaten too much or the wrong types of foods before bed, or because your medication needs to be adjusted. Symptoms include frequent urination and excessive thirst. Because high blood sugar can lead to a diabetic coma, take steps to lower your sugar levels. If they do not work, or if your symptoms get worse, seek emergency medical care.

Step 1

Check your blood sugar at regular intervals, as well as if you experience the symptoms of hyperglycemia. Compare your blood glucose readings with your target blood sugar range as specified by your doctor.

Step 2

Check your urine for ketones if your blood sugar reading is above 240 mg/dl. If you detect ketones, or if you experience fruity-smelling breath, nausea and vomiting or a dry mouth, contact your doctor right away.

Step 3

Exercise as long as your blood sugar levels are under 240 mg/dl, or if you detect no ketones. Go for a walk, ride your bike, swim laps in the pool or do whatever other exercise you normally do.

Step 4

Check your blood sugar every 30 minutes to be sure your levels are dropping and that they are not too low. Check your levels several times over the next several hours to make sure that your glucose levels are where they are supposed to be.

Step 5

Stick to your medication and diet plan to avoid developing hyperglycemia again. If you are having trouble controlling your diabetes, talk to your doctor, as you might require a different treatment plan.
