Buying in-season fruits and vegetables has many advantages. For starters, you're not paying the added price that comes with storing and shipping produce from elsewhere in the country of from other countries. Fruits and vegetables that are in season also are fresher and usually stronger in flavor, since they haven't been frozen and stored for long periods. If you have the time and space, consider growing your own, either in your backyard or at a community garden.

Step 1

Learn what fruits and vegetables your state grows. Call your local chamber of commerce or check a crop calendar. For example, apples are in season between August and October in Maine, but only in August and September in Arizona. By buying what's available locally, you save money and get fresher produce.

Step 2

Look for a "pick-your-own" farm in your community. This is usually a good place to buy seasonal fruits. if you can't pick your own fruit and vegetables, many farms might sell them.

Step 3

Join a local produce co-operative. These work differently depend on where you live, but usually you pay a monthly fee and in return you receive a box of fresh produce every week. Most co-ops only work with locally grown, seasonal produce. But ask to make sure that's the case.

Step 4

Try a new fruit or vegetable. Spinach might not be in season this month, but you could find arugula, collard greens, endive or escarole. Each has a distinctive flavor, so you'll be able to try something different and save money at the same time.

Step 5

Visit a farmer's market. Because these markets sell produce grown on small family farms, you can be sure you will only be buying locally grown items. Many sellers at farmers' markets will give you a discount if you buy large quantities or if you show up in the evening, near closing time.
