Unwanted, or excessive facial hair can have a harmful psychological effect on you. It can make you feel self-conscious about your face. It can also be embarrassing and frustrating. You may discover a stray hair above your lip or next to your ear or nose. Unwanted facial hair is common skin condition that can be caused by disease, medications, stress, chemicals or heredity. Fortunately, you can permanently eliminate facial hair.
Step 1
See a dermatologist and consider electrolysis to permanently remove your facial hair. The dermatologist will assess your skin and insert a fine wire into your hair follicle. The electric current destroys your hair roots and any loosened hair is removed with tweezers. You can also go to a health spa or beauty salon for this procedure, but they will be less skilled and will not be able to treat your facial skin if it gets irritated.
Step 2
Consult a dermatologist about photoepilation to remove your facial hair permanently. This treatment is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The dermatologist introduces intense pulses of light to individually destroy your hair follicles. This procedure needs to be repeated, so you may be asked to return for a few more sessions to ensure the effects are permanent.
Step 3
Use the prescription cream called Vaniqa (eflornithine HCl) to permanently eliminate facial hair. This cream stops facial hair from growing by blocking an enzyme in your hair follicle which is needed for hair to grow. Consult your doctor about this prescription-only cream.
Tips and Warnings
- Methods such as waxing, tweezing and depilatory creams will not permanently remove hair, but they can slow it down.
