Softball players face a number of challenges when they take the playing field. They need to know how to handle the bat, run the bases, play the field and maybe even pitch. Having to juggle so many athletic skills can prove daunting, but keeping a few helpful hints in mind can give softball players a better chance for success.

Hitting

A difficult skill to master, hitting requires dedicated practice and hard work. Remember to hold the bat in your fingers rather than your palms for greater control. Stay calm and relaxed at the plate. Loose muscles translate into a quicker, smoother swing. In fast pitch softball, adjust your location in the batter's box depending on the pitcher you're facing, moving up in the box against drop ball pitchers and moving back against rise ball pitchers. In slow pitch leagues, don't be scared to walk. And finally, whether slow pitch or fast pitch, make each swing count. Have a definite plan in mind and attack the ball.

Pitching

Fast pitch softball pitchers need to repeat the same mechanics on every pitch. Remember to explode off the pitching rubber for maximum drive and power. Next, reach back toward second base on your arm's downswing to create more arm whip. When releasing the ball, keep your upper body erect and your front stride leg stiff, using the leg's resistance to help generate greater pitch speed. In slow pitch leagues, where hitting is much easier, pitchers should remember to work outside the strike zone to tempt hitters into swinging at bad pitches.

Fielding

When taking the field, always keep your head in the game and expect each pitch to be hit to you. One moment of indecision or distraction can surrender a hit or lead to an unnecessary error. Know your position's responsibilities inside and out, planning your throw before the ball ever gets to your glove. And speaking of gloves, make certain yours has no structural flaws and properly fits your hand.

Baserunning

Much like fielders, baserunners need to keep their heads in the game and remain focused at all times. Know whether or not there will be a force play at the next base. Study the position of the fielders and know which ones have strong throwing arms, and then use the information to decide if you can take the extra base or try to score from second on a single. Also, always remember to look for your base coaches and listen to their instructions.

Attitude

Softball is as much mental as physical. Failure is a natural part of the game, so never get discouraged. Stay positive and learn from every mistake. You also need to be honest when assessing your game. Recognizing your weaknesses and correcting them is the only way to improve. It also helps to set goals, which can act as motivation during practice and games.
