If you have a large amount of apples that are about to go to waste, you don't have to throw them in the compost bin. Whip up a few recipes to make good use of those apples before they turn to mush. Besides snacking on apples, you can turn the sweet, crispy fruit into pies, homemade applesauce or dried apple chips rather than watching them wither away in your refrigerator.

Step 1

Make a simple homemade apple pie to put some of your excess apples to good use. Toss sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon and butter and pour the mixture into a refrigerated pie crust. Top with another crust, and bake the pie until it's golden brown on top and the apples are hot and softened.

Step 2

Steam and puree chopped, peeled apples to make simple homemade applesauce. Add in water to thin the mixture and lemon juice to keep the sauce from turning brown. Eat the applesauce plain or use it in baked goods to add a healthy burst of sweetness.

Step 3

Place sliced apples in a food dehydrator or a low oven until they are completely dry to make your own dried apple chips for snacking.

Step 4

Throw together a quick Waldorf salad. Toss diced apples with mayonnaise, lemon juice and chopped walnuts. Use up extra apples by tossing them into any salad, such as homemade chicken or tuna salad.

Step 5

Make homemade apple juice to use up a bunch of fresh apples. Simmer chopped apples in water until the apples are soft. Pour the liquid through a strainer to remove the flesh and skin, resulting in pure homemade apple juice.
