Skin changes are common during pregnancy. In fact, the American Academy of Family Physicians says expectant mothers can experience anything from hyperpigmentation to dry skin, dermatitis and rashes. Changes in skin color are due to hormonal changes; they sometimes disappear on their own postpartum. Prescription creams are also available for treatment, but you will have to wait until after you deliver the baby to use them. In the meantime, expectant mothers can try natural remedies to deal with skin discoloration.
Step 1
Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Sun exposure can worsen skin discoloration. Use sunscreen even in cloudy days, as the ultraviolet rays will penetrate the cloud cover. Skin discoloration often appears on the face, but the neck, chest and arms can also be affected; make sure you use sunscreen on all exposed areas.
Step 2
Use gentle products on your skin. Irritated skin is more sensitive and might burn more easily, worsening the discoloration problem.
Step 3
Talk to your doctor about taking folic acid supplements. According to the Baby Center Australia Medical Advisory Board, pregnant women who don't get enough folic acid might have more problems with skin discoloration.
Step 4
Try some lemon juice, a natural bleacher. Use a cotton ball to dab fresh juice on the areas of skin that are discolored. Repeat a couple of times per day.
