Ery-Tab (generic name erythromycin) is a antibiotic treatment used to fight bacterial infections. According to Drugs.com, Ery-Tab is available as an oral suspension and as an enteric-coated or delayed-release pill. Take this medication as your doctor instructs to prevent any harmful complications.
Minor Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, Ery-Tab can wreak havoc on your digestive system and cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea. Vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration and electrolyte (natural minerals in your body like potassium and sodium) loss. When you are dehydrated, your skin is dry and you are susceptible to forming kidney stones because you are not flushing out your urinary system. Diarrhea can also irritate your rectal lining. In some cases, Ery-Tab can cause a throbbing headache, dizziness and fatigue. Vaginal itching, vaginal discharge and a skin rash are other benign side effects of Ery-Tab use. These symptoms can become problematic if they continue. Be a team-player in your medical care and tell your doctor if these signs develop.
Detrimental Side Effects
MedlinePlus states that Ery-Tab can cause such detrimental side effects as hives, wheezing and trouble breathing or swallowing. Hives refers to a skin reaction in response to Ery-Tab's ingredients. You may develop red itchy protrusions on your skin. Trouble breathing and swallowing are both potentially life-threatening. Jaundice (yellowing of the white parts of your eyes and skin), dark urine and light-colored stools are other harmful side effects of Ery-Tab. Do not ignore these side effects and notify your doctor.
Pseudomembranous Colitis
According to the National Library of Medicine, Ery-Tab can increase your risk for developing a gastrointestinal infection called pseudomembranous colitis. Your intestines are normally colonized with all sorts of normal bacteria. When you introduce Ery-Tab into your system, this can alter the bacterial make-up of your intestines and promote overgrowth of a specific bacteria called Clostridium difficile. Pseudomembranous colitis symptoms include stomach pain, bloody stool and diarrhea. Tell your doctor if you notice changes in your bowel movements.
