Ovarian cysts are small sacs of fluid that grow inside or on the surface of your ovaries. They are also known as functional cysts because they occur during your normal menstrual function and usually form when your ovaries produce excess estrogen. Herbs may help dissolve ovarian cysts and relieve symptoms like pelvic pain and irregular menstruation. Some cysts may require treatment, so consult your health care provider before starting herbal treatment to dissolve ovarian cysts.

Herbal Actions

Herbal remedies that dissolve ovarian cysts work in different ways. Western herbs help balance estrogen and progesterone. They prevent excess estrogen from stimulating cyst growth and help dissolve cysts that have already begun to grow. In traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM, herbs dissolve ovarian cysts by improving blood circulation and removing stagnant fluids, such as water and phlegm, that cause the problem. Check with a knowledgeable practitioner for advice about dosage and preparation of herbal remedies to dissolve ovarian cysts.

Dong Quai

Dong quai, or Angelica sinensis, is a native Chinese herb with umbrella-like flowers. TCM practitioners use the roots to treat gynecological problems, including irregular menstruation and ovarian cysts. In her 2009 book "The Holistic Herbal Directory," herbalist Penelope Ody notes that the roots improve blood flow. This helps restore normal circulation to the pelvic area and dissolve ovarian cysts. Dong quai is an ingredient in a TCM formula known as Danggui Shaoyao San, which is a remedy for infertility and ovarian cysts. Do not use this herb during pregnancy.

Licorice

Licorice, or Glycyrrhiza glabra, is a Mediterranean herb with purple or white flowers. Herbalists use the rhizomes to treat gastrointestinal problems, and licorice also affects the endocrine system. It may help dissolve ovarian cysts by its action on the adrenal glands, which regulate hormone production. In their 2001 book "Herbal Remedies," naturopathic doctors Asa Hershoff and Andrea Rotelli explain that licorice improves adrenal health, balances estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, and helps remove ovarian cysts. Do not use licorice if you have high blood pressure, as it may worsen this condition.

Chasteberry

Chasteberry, or Vitex agnus-castus, is a shrub found throughout southern Europe. It has a long history of treating gynecological disorders, including painful menstruation and hormonal imbalance. The berries are rich in diterpenes, which act on the pituitary gland to reduce estrogen and increase progesterone levels, bringing your body back to a balanced ration between the two hormones. It may not only dissolve ovarian cysts but may also help resolve related problems. Hershoff and Rotelli note that chasteberry is especially good for disorders caused by ovarian cysts, such as infertility and irregular menstruation. Do not use chasteberry if you are pregnant.
